Beautiful Boy: A father’s journey through his son’s addiction by David Sheff
This remarkable memoir, written by David Sheff about his son Nic Sheff’s addiction to drugs, his attempts to recover from them and the effect of his struggles on their friends and family, topped the New York Times Best Seller List twice in 2008. It is a heart-wrenching account, full of the author’s fears and hopes as he tries to find his role in the unfolding drama that is Nic’s progressive substance abuse. In the text, as well as the book’s acknowledgements, Sheff credits a number of individuals for their help and support, noting that the addict’s journey of recovery is made possible only by the loving and concerted efforts of many. Among those mentioned as instrumental to Nic’s recovery are Jace Horwitz at Herbert House. Below are some reproduced passages relevant to Herbert Houses’ participation in Nic’s treatment, with permission from the author.
It is truly an honor for us, to be mentioned in such light. We cherish the opportunities afforded us as we help and guide men into this new and remarkable world called “Recovery.
Herbert House’s location and property, p. 210:
“Herbert House, a sober-living house in Culver City, is actually a cluster of bougainvillea- and rose-draped bungalows, whitewashed and cheerful, with small porches with loveseats and rocking chairs, all facing a central brick courtyard with palms, picnic tables, and garden furniture — sort of a Melrose Place for addicts.”
Nic’s relationship with Jace, p. 210:
”Nic settles in and likes it there. He makes good friends with other patients, and he becomes especially close with the director of the program, a compassionate man named Jace who has dedicated his life to helping addicts and alcoholics.”
The importance of Nic’s residence at Herbert House, p.313:
“For many addicts, long-term stays in sober-living communities such as Herbert House changed — that is, saved — their lives.”
Acknowledgements, p.319:
”“Throughout the past few years I have been awed by the brave and dedicated people who work to help addicts and their families. My family was counseled, guided, and supported by David Frankel, Rick Rawson, Paul Ehrlich, Jace Horwitz at Herbert House Sober Living Environment, and humble saints who prefer to be mentioned only by their first names, Randy and Ted.”.”
